
Getting the Most Out of Our 120W/cm Mercury UV Lamps
We build our standard mercury lamps to hit a power density of 120W/cm. Why that specific number? Because when your production line is flying and the substrate is moving fast, you don’t have a lot of time to get that polymerization right. You need it to happen now.
Let’s talk power and light
Basically, we’re packing a huge amount of electrical energy into a very small space. The lamp ionizes mercury gas, which kicks out a broad spectrum of UV light—mostly in the UVC and UVB ranges. That light is what hits the photoinitiators in your ink or coating. It’s the magic moment where liquid resins turn into hard, solid plastic in a matter of seconds. But here’s the thing: your ballast has to be a perfect match for this wattage. If you under-drive the lamp, you’ll end up with “under-cure.” You know the feeling—that annoying tacky surface that just won’t dry. On the flip side, if you push it too hard, you’ll kill the tube early or crack the quartz. It’s all about balance.
Dealing with the heat
We use high-purity fused quartz for the envelope. We do this so the UV radiation can sail right through the glass without getting trapped or absorbed. But let’s be honest: 120W/cm getshot. Really hot. You’ve got to make sure your cooling system—whether you’re using forced air or water-cooled jackets—can actually handle that thermal load. If the heat builds up, the lamp will either burn out at the ends or the quartz will just snap from the thermal shock. Not a great day at the office.
Making it work for you
These lamps are designed to be simple drop-in replacements. They fit right into most standard industrial UV conveyors and printing presses without any fuss. We spend a lot of time obsessing over the curing chemistry. If you’ve tried other lamps and your finish isn’t as hard as it should be, or the adhesion feels off, it usually comes down to the consistency of the mercury discharge. We’re confident in our gear.
