
Dealing with Electrical Noise in Your UV Arrays
If you’ve got a shop full of large-scale printing presses, you know it’s a noisy place. I’m not just talking about the sound of the machines. I mean the electrical noise. Those high-power motors and frequency converters throw off a ton of electromagnetic interference (EMI). For most UV lamps, that “noise” is a nightmare. It messes with the ballast, which leads to that annoying flicker—or worse, it just kills the lamp way before its time.
Why some lamps just hold up better
We build our lamps to survive in these kinds of “dirty” power environments. The secret is in the ballast and how we shield the ignition system. We skipped the cheap, consumer-grade parts and went with heavy-duty filtering capacitors and shielded inductors. Think of it as a filter for your power. It stops those random voltage spikes from your other machinery from tripping the lamp’s protection or messing with the frequency. Here’s the thing: if your ballast isn’t built for high-interference zones, the lamp struggles to keep a steady arc. That means your UV-C output starts swinging all over the place. Suddenly, your curing or sterilization times aren’t reliable anymore. Our units just stay steady, even when the grid is acting up.
The trade-off
Now, this kind of protection isn’t free. It takes up more space. You won’t find this stuff in those slim, budget drivers because the components are simply bigger. The shielding adds some weight, too. We also had to add a dedicated heat sink so the filters don’t overheat when you’re running 24/7. It’s a bit bulkier, but it works.
Real-world results in the shop
In a typical printing facility, you might have ten or more lamps sitting right next to servo motors. We’ve seen standard lamps burn out fast in these setups because they’re taking a constant beating from electrical transients. Our design basically walls off the lamp arc from all that line noise. It’s a simple drop-in replacement. You don’t have to spend a weekend rewiring your entire shop’s grounding system just to stop the flickering. You just plug it in and get back to work.
